Meet Joan

Joan Hyman’s grounded teaching style seamlessly supports her students as they emerge from their practice with the rich and bright energy that yoga has to offer.

Joan’s teachings come from an organic and intuitive place, as she draws upon the combined studies of Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga as well as Ayurveda and meditation. An authentic modern-day yogi, Joan's love and devotion show up in her practice and throughout her teaching. You will leave her class feeling transformed and deeply aligned.

Joan spent fifteen years as a distinguished YogaWorks Senior Teacher before bringing her expertise to Wanderlust as the Director of Teacher Trainings in 2016. Now, with over twenty years experience leading retreats, trainings, and international workshops, Joan continues to travel the globe leading her own signature trainings. Joan created The School of Yoga, which is a professional program that offers continuing education, including a team of teachers who are experts in their field of study. Joan continues to partner with yoga schools world wide to help develop high quality teacher training programs and make the practice of yoga accessible to everyone!

Twisting postures can be transformative especially when integrated with the breath.  We all know that twisting postures help to cleanse the organs and open the nadis, which are energetic pathways in our subtle body. Joan will guide you through an asana practice helping you to access twisting postures from the inner body, before moving you into a cleansing pranayama practice. All levels welcome and there will be a short discussion before moving you into a practice. Expect to leave with more clarity and inner balance.

13h-16h Exploring your bandhas with arm balances and handstands.

Learn tips and tricks to open your wings and get your body off the ground.  Face this exploration of arm balances with courage, breath, and playfulness.  No need to fight your way up, learn a pathway to channel these postures into your practice with enthusiasm and ease.   Arm balances teach us how to use our bandhas by learning how to root and rebound and draw energy up into our core muscles and central channel.  Part of the reason why they leave us feeling so energized!  When practiced in a supportive environment they will leave you feel strong and confident and ready to move through any fear and tackle any challenge!  We will explore handstands and pick up jump backs before moving into arm balances that teach you how to integrate your inner body and bandhas into the practice. All levels welcome!

10h-13h Opening Your Psoas with Asymmetrical Backbends

The psoas muscle is the deepest muscle in our bodies. It's sometimes referred to as the muscle of our soul.  This core-stabilizing muscle that runs from our trunk to the hipbone affects mobility, structural balance, joint function, flexibility, and much more. In addition to its function to help keep the body upright and moving, it affects two of our most vital systems: digestion and breath.  In this workshop, you will learn where your psoas is and how to unlock this deep muscle with asymmetrical backbends.  These backbends are more challenging because they require us to engage our core muscles which help to keep the pelvis centered and this is how we unlock our psoas! There will be a brief discussion of the psoas muscle followed by a practice that will include inversions, hanumanasana, and natrajasana!
